Starting your wig journey can feel overwhelming. I know, because I’ve been there. From choosing the right style to understanding fit, hair type, and care, there’s a lot to learn. That’s why I created Haló: to guide you every step of the way with clear, practical advice so you can feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself again.

Below is some information that you might find useful if you’re new to wigs and hair loss. You’ll find lots more information in the other sections of our education hub and our social media.

  • Hair loss can feel overwhelming, emotional, and sometimes isolating. Remember, it’s okay to grieve the change, and it’s normal to feel anxious or self-conscious at first.

    Tips:

    • Give yourself time to adjust, you don’t need to have it all figured out immediately.

    • Surround yourself with supportive people who understand or are willing to learn.

    • Journaling or speaking with a professional can help process emotions.

    • Small steps matter: wearing a wig, scarf, or hat can help you feel more comfortable while you adapt.

The key is to be gentle with yourself, confidence comes gradually, not overnight. (It took me years!)

  • Not all wigs are the same, and your day-to-day life should guide your choices. Consider:

    • Activity level: If you’re active, lighter wigs or secure cap constructions can be easier to wear.

    • Maintenance time: Some styles require more styling; others are lower-maintenance for busy days.

    • Climate & season: Lighter wigs for summer, breathable caps for warmer climates, etc.

Choosing a wig that suits your lifestyle helps you wear it comfortably, confidently, and without stress, making the experience feel effortless. Don’t forget, you can have more than one wig to suit different aspects of your lifestyle!

  • When picking your first wig, consider:

    • Hair type: Human hair wigs look and feel natural, can be styled with heat, and last longer. Synthetic wigs are lighter and often lower-maintenance but can look less realistic and don’t last as long. (All our wigs at Haló are human hair).

    • Cap type: Lace front, full lace, or glue less beginner caps all have different benefits. Some are more easier to manage than others. Especially with a first time wig, I would lean toward a beginner or lace front cap. (You can read more about these in the wig terminology section!)

    • Length & density: I would recommending choosing something that matches your lifestyle and experience with hair. Shorter styles are easier to manage; longer styles need more care.

    • Start with a style and colour that feels most “you” , your confidence matters more than anything else.

  • Make sure your wig fits snugly but comfortably, not too tight or loose. Proper head measurements are key here. We will measure you during an in person consultation or there is a detailed tutorial on how to measure your own head in our education hub section!

    • Adjustable straps, combs, or elastic bands can help secure your wig in place.

    • A proper fit will help your wig look natural and feel like a part of you.

  • Wearing a wig isn’t just about the hair, it’s about how you feel. It’s normal to have ups and downs as you adjust. Give yourself grace, celebrate small wins, and remember that it is a process.

If you ever feel unsure, feel free to reach out for a chat or consultation. A little bit of guidance can help you choose the perfect style and boost your confidence.
